Empowering Female Journalists: A Path to Media Entrepreneurship

I recently came across an enlightening piece by Basheer Luqman Olarewaju, a respected member of the National Institute of Public Relations, who urged female journalists to broaden their horizons and venture into media entrepreneurship.

At a seminar organized by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Kwara State, Olarewaju emphasized that female journalists must leverage their talents in the evolving media landscape. He highlighted the importance of understanding that the realms of information and marketing are vast and not limited to traditional perceptions. He advised on turning media messages, whether news or adverts, into sellable commodities and stressed the need for journalists to develop skills beyond news gathering, such as marketing, business planning, and podcasting.

Otunba Isaac Amao, an oil, gas, and real estate expert, further explained that entrepreneurship involves innovation, risk-taking, and resource management. He encouraged women journalists to identify problems and provide solutions, emphasizing the unique managerial skills women bring to entrepreneurship. He advised breaking barriers through diversity, storytelling, and content creation while remaining innovative and passionate.

The seminar, as explained by Bola Ipinlaye, Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Women Journalists, reflects the association's commitment to continuous training and development of its members. Kwara State NUJ Chairman, Abdullateef Ahmed, echoed this sentiment by calling for more engagements to empower women journalists intellectually, urging them to tap into media partnerships and diversify their skills.

This insightful seminar strongly underscores the importance of continuous learning and diversification for women in journalism. By embracing entrepreneurship, female journalists can not only enhance their careers but also contribute significantly to the media industry.
